Episode 210: I Finally Learned Why Certain Colors Make Me Look Better Than Others

Written by Sandra Silverman | May 19, 2026 8:10:26 PM

I’ve spent years loving fashion, makeup, jewelry, beauty treatments — all of it. But despite all that time around beauty and style, nobody had ever truly explained to me why certain colors made me look vibrant and alive while others made me look tired.

I just knew it instinctively.

Or at least I thought I did.

This week on Party’s Over, I sat down with Mariana, a professional color analyst, for a full color analysis session, and I was completely fascinated by the process from the moment we started.

At first, I thought this was going to be mostly about fashion trends or personal preferences. You know — “you look nice in blue” or “you should wear more red.” But it turned out to be much more scientific and specific than I expected.

Mariana explained that color analysis is really about how different shades interact with your natural coloring — your skin tone, undertones, hair color, eye color, and even the contrast level between your features.

And apparently, colors can either work with your face… or against it.

She began by comparing lighter colors versus darker colors against my face. The difference was immediate. Some colors brightened my complexion and softened shadows around my eyes and mouth. Others made me look more tired, pale, or harsh.

Then we moved into warm versus cool tones, soft versus bright shades, metals, makeup colors, and even hair color recommendations. I learned that my undertones are warm, which means gold, rose gold, and copper work much better on me than silver.

That part I wasn’t entirely shocked by, because I already wear a lot of rose gold jewelry. But hearing Mariana explain why it works was incredibly helpful. Suddenly my instincts actually made sense.

What surprised me more was discovering that I’m what’s called a “Warm Spring.”

Apparently, my best colors are lighter, warmer, brighter shades — coral, warm reds, camel, creams, warm browns, peachy pinks, and certain oranges. Cooler tones, dusty shades, gray, and black near my face were much less flattering.

Now let me tell you something honestly: hearing that black wasn’t my best color was emotionally difficult for me.

Like many women, I practically built an entire wardrobe around black clothing. Black feels safe. Chic. Easy. Sophisticated. But Mariana explained something important: this doesn’t mean you can never wear black. It simply means there are smarter ways to wear it.

For example, if black isn’t your ideal color near your face, you can still wear black pants, skirts, or dresses — just pair them with warmer tones closer to your complexion. You can soften the effect with jewelry, scarves, makeup, or jackets in colors that naturally brighten your skin.

That completely changed the way I thought about style.

What I loved most about this experience was that it wasn’t really about vanity. It was about understanding yourself better.

And honestly, that can become incredibly empowering.

So many women spend years feeling frustrated while shopping, trying on color after color without understanding why some things simply feel wrong. But once you understand your palette, shopping becomes easier. Makeup becomes easier. Even hair color decisions become easier.

At one point during the session, Mariana pulled out a coral shade that instantly made my face come alive. Even I could see the difference immediately. My skin looked warmer, brighter, healthier. It was one of those moments where you suddenly understand why people become obsessed with color analysis.

And beyond the clothing itself, I started realizing something else.

The right colors don’t just change how other people see you.

They change how you see yourself.

There’s confidence in walking into a room feeling harmonious and comfortable in your own skin. There’s confidence in understanding what naturally works for you instead of constantly fighting against yourself.

By the end of the session, I found myself looking at style very differently. Not as a set of rules, but as information. Helpful information. Tools you can use to feel more like yourself.

And honestly? That feels much healthier than chasing trends.

If you’ve ever wondered why some colors light you up while others drain you, this episode of Party’s Over may completely change the way you look at your closet.

And yes… I’m still emotionally processing the black clothing situation.
