Episode 129: Spill It: Your Body… Is Not a Home Improvement Project

Written by Sandra Silverman | Mar 1, 2026 7:37:29 PM

Every week, Spill It is where we drop the good-girl script and tell the truth — and in Episode 129, we got one of the most unforgettable questions we’ve ever received.

A listener wrote:
“I want a breast augmentation.
My husband says we should spend the money on a kitchen remodel.
How do I negotiate this?”

Let’s just say… we had thoughts.

Because this is not just a conversation about cosmetic surgery.
It’s a conversation about autonomy.

Somewhere along the way, many women were taught that:
you can have desires… as long as they’re approved.
you can want confidence… as long as it’s convenient for everyone else.
you can change your life… as long as it fits the budget line item labeled “optional.”

No.

Your body is not a shared household appliance.
Your confidence is not a luxury item.
Your emotional wellbeing is not a “nice-to-have if finances allow.”

We talked honestly about:
• the difference between partnership and control
• money dynamics in relationships
• the danger of framing your body as a “negotiation topic”
• and the truth that you are allowed to want what you want — without apology

Of course relationships include compromise.
Of course finances are real.
But there is a difference between mutual financial planning…
and treating your body like a countertop upgrade.

And here’s the ultimate truth:

If something impacts your self-worth, confidence, emotional wellness, and sense of self…
it is not shallow.
It is not silly.
It is not “extra.”

It is valid.
It is yours.
And it deserves respect.

You don’t need to “earn” your body decisions.
You don’t need to beg for permission.
And you certainly do not need to explain to anyone why confidence matters to you.

The party may be over…
But self-respect, autonomy, and owning your life?
That’s the real celebration.
